The best prevention is always a safer driver, although even then it’s still easy to get caught offguard.

It’s the damn Hyundai trailers that you need to be careful tailing. When you pass them, you’ll notice they have little or no bracing to prevent a vehicle from going under. Other trailers at least have some steel angles or tubes to help triangulate the design.

Had a coworker die last month from this exact type of accident. Definitely a wake up call.

No under run bars where you are? (not that they’re perfect of course)

All trucks have them (often called Mansfield bars over here). But as the video shows, they don’t always work (which is what the video is showing).

Posted this a couple days ago:

More crashing and a bit less talking. Mostly looking at what happens in offset rather than head-on cases.

Or here for some scary raw video:

Apparently the newer ones are better, but I imagine the old ones will be on the road for a long time.

It’s important to pay attention on the road. It’s important to enough of us that it’s looking like something that should really be addressed at large - educating drivers about this, and ecouraging the trucking industry to revise the underride guards. As it is, the trucking industry has been fighting legislation mandating the use of side underride guards.

Oh damn, my condolences. That’s tragic, tragic indeed. This is definitely an issue that could be prevented if human lives were valued above cost.

My condolences to you and the family.

And, notably, those are the ones that performed the worst in testing. It might be time for someone to spell out some more stringent requirements for underride guards, although that would have to take place at the state level, at least here in the U.S. No simple answer to this issue, but it would be well worth tackling for the sake of saving lives.

Clearly the only thing to do if you care about the safety of yourself and those who ride with you is to buy a bro truck with a massive lift kit and preferably a bull bar.
